Advanced Gum Recession Treatment

A healthy, confident smile relies on a strong foundation. When your gums begin to pull back or wear away, it compromises more than just your appearance—it exposes the delicate roots of your teeth, leaving them vulnerable to decay, infection, and potential tooth loss.

If you have noticed your teeth looking longer or feel a sharp twinge of sensitivity when drinking cold water, you may be experiencing gingival recession. Ignoring this condition can lead to severe structural damage. At Golden State Dental Co., we serve as the premier choice for advanced gum recession treatment across Northern California. Our experienced team uses precise, state-of-the-art techniques to restore your gum line, eliminate discomfort, and protect your long-term oral health.

What is Gingival Recession (Gum Loss)?

Gingival recession, commonly referred to as gum loss, is the process in which the margin of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or the tooth’s root.

When this happens, “pockets” or gaps form between the teeth and gum line, making it easy for disease-causing bacteria to build up. If left untreated, the supporting tissue and bone structures of the teeth can be severely damaged, ultimately leading to loose teeth or tooth loss.

Why Am I Experiencing a Receding Gum Line?

A receding gum line can develop gradually, often without any initial pain. Understanding the root cause is the first step toward effective management. The most common factors include:

  • Aggressive Tooth Brushing: Brushing your teeth too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear away your enamel and tear thin gum tissue.

  • Genetics: Some individuals are naturally predisposed to thin or fragile gum tissue, making them more susceptible to recession regardless of their oral hygiene habits.

  • Teeth Grinding and Clenching (Bruxism): Clenching or grinding your teeth puts excessive, unnatural force on the teeth, causing the gum margins to back away.

  • Periodontal Diseases: Bacterial gum infections destroy gum tissue and the supporting bone that holds your teeth in place.

When to See a Dentist for Receding Gums?

Because gum recession happens slowly, many people do not realize it is happening until specific symptoms arise. You should promptly consult a dentist for receding gums or visit a receding gums specialist if you notice any of the following warning signs:

  • Severe Tooth Sensitivity: Exposed tooth roots lack protective enamel, causing sharp pain when exposed to hot, cold, sweet, or sour foods and drinks.

  • Changes in Your Smile: Your teeth may appear visibly longer, or you might feel a distinct notch or indentation near the gum line where the root meets the crown.

  • Persistent Redness or Swelling: Gums that bleed easily during brushing or flossing, or appear chronically inflamed.

Early intervention by a qualified gum recession dentist can prevent the need for more invasive surgical procedures later on.

Gum Grafting

When gum recession occurs, gum grafting is often recommended as an essential gum treatment to restore the health, appearance, and function of your gums. This procedure typically involves transplanting tissue, usually taken from the roof of the mouth, to the affected area.

By covering exposed tooth roots and increasing the thickness of the gum tissue, gum grafting helps prevent further recession and is a crucial component of advanced gum care to avoid tooth loss. In some cases, donor tissue may be used as an alternative. Gum grafting not only enhances the aesthetics of your smile but also plays a vital role in maintaining long-term oral health and preventing complications like tooth mobility or loss.

Golden State Dental Co

shape-1-1

Professional Options for Gingival Recession Treatments

At Golden State Dental Co., we customize our gingival recession treatments based on the severity of your tissue loss and the underlying cause of the condition.

Non-Surgical Management and Early Prevention

In its earliest and mildest stages, a receding gum line can often be managed without surgery. Our clinical approach focuses on halting further progression through:

  • Behavioral Modification: Training on proper, gentle brushing techniques and recommending soft-bristled or electric toothbrushes.

  • Custom Nightguards: Fabricating comfortable, medical-grade oral appliances to alleviate the destructive forces of teeth grinding.

  • Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing): If plaque and tartar buildup are driving the recession, our team performs a meticulous deep cleaning to eliminate bacteria below the gum line, allowing the remaining tissue to heal and reattach firmly.

New Treatment for Receding Gums

For patients seeking modern, minimally invasive solutions, we implement new treatment for receding gums designed to accelerate healing times, minimize post-operative discomfort, and optimize aesthetic outcomes. By incorporating advanced tissue engineering and growth factors, we are able to stimulate natural tissue regeneration, offering a highly effective and comfortable alternative to traditional protocols.

Restoring Your Smile: Gum Grafting Surgery

When tissue loss is significant and the tooth root is fully exposed, surgical intervention becomes necessary to safeguard the tooth.

What is a Gum Graft?

A gum graft is a highly effective, routine clinical procedure designed to stop the progression of gum loss and cover exposed roots. During a gum recession surgery, a small amount of new tissue is placed over the area of recession to reinforce the thin gums and encourage stable tissue growth.

Types of Gum Grafting Surgery We Perform

Our practice provides specialized variations of gingival recession surgery tailored to your specific anatomical needs:

  • Connective-Tissue Grafts: The most common method, where tissue is taken from under a flap on the roof of your mouth and stitched to the gum tissue surrounding the exposed root.

  • Free Gingival Grafts: Ideal for patients with naturally thin gums, this involves taking a small amount of tissue directly from the roof of the mouth and attaching it to the treatment area to thicken the natural tissue barrier.

  • Pedicle Grafts: Tissue is grafted from the gums immediately surrounding or next to the tooth needing repair, utilizing a local flap that maintains its own blood supply.

Advanced Gum Grafting Surgery for Severe Cases

For advanced or widespread tissue loss, we perform Advanced Gum Grafting Surgery. This sophisticated technique allows us to reconstruct large areas of the gum line in a single session, utilizing premium donor materials or specialized biomaterials to eliminate the need for a secondary donor site on the roof of your mouth, significantly enhancing patient comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gum Recession Surgery

How long does it take for gum recession to happen?

Gum recession is typically a slow, gradual process that develops over several years. Because it happens so slowly, many patients don’t notice their gums are receding until symptoms like tooth sensitivity or longer-looking teeth appear. However, the timeline can vary:

  • Chronic cases (Periodontal Disease or Aggressive Brushing): Takes years to become visibly noticeable.

  • Acute cases (Trauma, Piercings, or Poorly Fitted Dental Appliances): Can cause localized gum recession within a few months.

Regular dental checkups at Golden State Dental Co across our Sacramento, Folsom, and Roseville offices can help detect and stop gum loss in its earliest, invisible stages.

Does gum recession treatment hurt?

Non-surgical treatments involve minimal to no discomfort. For a gum graft or gingival recession surgery, local anesthesia is utilized to ensure the treatment area is entirely numb during the procedure. Any post-operative tenderness can be easily managed with standard over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers.

Can receding gums grow back naturally without surgery?

No. Once gum tissue has receded and pulled away from the tooth, it cannot grow back naturally on its own. While mild cases can be stabilized with non-surgical cleanings and lifestyle adjustments, moderate to severe tissue loss requires professional options like a gum graft to fully recover the exposed roots.

How long is the recovery after Advanced Gum Grafting Surgery?

Most patients can return to work or light daily activities within 1 to 2 days following an Advanced Gum Grafting Surgery. Complete healing of the soft tissue typically takes about 1 to 2 weeks. Our clinical team will provide you with specific dietary guidelines (such as eating soft foods) and gentle oral care instructions to ensure a swift, comfortable recovery.

Came here and got my grafting done. I was nervous about the procedure because I just wasn’t very educated about oral care or procedures that support in maintaining oral health. I went several times before making my decision to undergo bone grafting. After conducting personal research and speaking to people in my life, including consulting other oral health practitioners, combined with the informative and educational sessions I had every time I came to an appointment, I had peace of mind to go into surgery.

I am very thankful to Dr Kyu and his team—they answered questions and addressed my concerns with solid answers. In return to my questions and concerns, they also had great bedside manners. I never felt judged or belittled for surfacing my questions and concerns as I have felt from oral care providers from way back in my past. Instead, they were very kind in educating me, bringing me up to speed at my pace of understanding, especially in what I did not truly understand about oral care and about the structure of my mouth and teeth, where problem areas were, and what signs to look for when flossing and what causes gum issues. They also answered questions I had about the various kinds of existing grafting materials—a concern of mine as it is foreign material going into me. Dr. Kyu addressed my questions with what he knew and with his experience. After vetting this information with people I knew and trusted who also practice oral health care, I felt more comfortable with the idea of getting surgery. I believe this trust grew also to Dr. Kyu and his team at Golden Dental, especially in that they knew what they are doing. As a patient, I just needed to get there myself and their responses to me and my concerns helped so much!

Another thing to highlight: Dr Kyu and his team thoughtfully considered my financial position going into this surgery. As a patient, I felt that I was having this surgery on my timeline and at my behest—not theirs. They have continued to show care to me in this area and these things add up in me going into my surgery with peace of mind and continues to show me they care about me as a person and not just another patient to count and I am grateful for it.

On a note about the surgery: it was painless and my road to recovery so far is going pretty smooth too. I am still being monitored for final recovery. However I will going back soon and look forward to being cared for by Dr. Kyu and his team at Golden Dental!

Excellent visit this week at Golden State Dental! Jessica is an absolute master at cleaning teeth, especially for someone like me with gum recession and root exposure. She used a newer desensitizing product on my teeth before cleaning (I think it was called Gluma). Worked great, no nerve tweaks with the sonic cleaning tool.

Jessica is super friendly, listens, and educates as she goes! She and her teammate worked so well together!

Kudos to Golden State Dental!

I came to know of Golden State dental in a state of distress. I had a 20+ year old implant that was failing and infected. The staff was welcoming, professional and responsive. I had surgery to attempt to save the implant and stop the infection which has shown to be successful. After a few follow up visits and monitoring by the doctor, it really makes it apparent how caring and sincere they are of their patients. I am very grateful

I am so happy with the results Dr. Paydar was able to achieve for me! I had a gum infection that caused bone loss and a precarious situation for my teeth. Dr. Paydar got rid of my gum infection and restored the bone loss. Dr. Paydar saved my natural teeth because of his skill dealing with my gum disease.

In addition, he has a positive and reassuring demeanor, that makes apprehensive patients (such as myself) feel like there is hope, and they are in good hands.

I highly recommend Dr. Paydar. He also has wonderful and competent assistants and office staff, as well.
